The problems concerning the reduced employment rate of the Roma appear in a quite similar manner at the both sides of Hungarian-Romanian border. Due to this similarity, and as the result of the emergence of a common labour market in the border region, coordinated strategies and ways of action are required in order to work out suitable solutions for improving the employment opportunities of Roma. Both in Romania and Hungary, the former regime developed assimilation policies, which encouraged the employment of Roma. After 1990 however, the situation of Roma became even worse, because of to the economic and social transition. The low educational level of Roma, together with the persisting discrimination against them and a series of cultural and social factors deriving from the traditional way of life of Roma communities made them to encounter huge difficulties in the labour market. This situation is constantly generating extreme poverty and social exclusion. The current economic crisis is further diminishing the employment opportunities available to the poorly educated and unskilled population groups, among them the Roma. The project is developing solutions for improving the employment opportunities available to Roma at the level of the whole Euroregion, within the framework of project activities a knowledge transfer will occur between the partners involved, including: the development of a shared methodology for testing the professional skills of Roma, adapted to their specific needs; the development of unitary professional standards and training methodologies. The general objective of the project is to provide professional and institutional support for the integration of the Roma population in the labour market of the Bihor - Hajdu-Bihar border region. The specific objectives are: 1. Identifying the main factors influencing the employment opportunities of Roma ; 2. Recommendation and elaboration of professional training programs specifically designed for Roma; 3. Setting up an institutional framework (counseling centers, job fairs) aimed at enhancing the occupational prospects of Roma; The project activities include: testing the professional abilities and skills of the Roma and the study of the employment situation within the Roma communities, generating a list of occupations recommended for Roma, development of training standards for some of these occupations and setting up of two centers for employment related information and counseling in Oradea and Debrecen. The target groups of the project are current and potential Roma employees within the active-aged group from the Roma communities of Oradea (Roma population: 6000}, Sanmartin (1070), Ineu de Cris. (850), Biharkeresztes (838), Told (259); current and potential employers of Roma; institutions and specialists in the field of professional recruitment and training. The results of the project are: 300 Roma persons-beneficiaries of testing services; 300 Roma persons receive individual recommendations concerning their prospective professional routes on the basis of individual testing;15 professions recommended to Roma, 7 training programs and corresponding professional standards developed; employment guide for employers and potential Roma employees; two counseling centers founded (Oradea, Debrecen); online employment database developed; 500 Roma receive individual counseling services; 2 job fairs for Roma (Oradea, Biharkeresztes) attended by 350 Roma job seekers.
